Tradovate API access: what you need before any bridge works
Any tool that places Tradovate orders from an alert does it through Tradovate's API, and Tradovate decides who gets an API key. Autoview is one of those tools: it takes a webhook from any system that can send one and turns it into an order. So before Autoview, or any other bridge, can place a single Tradovate order for you, you need a key from Tradovate itself.
Tradovate asks for three things. Every figure below was checked against Tradovate's own help center and API documentation on October 2, 2026.
The three requirements at a glance
| You need | What Tradovate says |
|---|---|
| A live, funded account | "To generate an API key, you must first have a live, funded Tradovate account with a minimum balance of $1,000." |
| The API Access add-on | "Your account must include an active subscription to the API Access Add-on." The add-on is listed at $25/month. |
| An eligible account type | "Prop firm and evaluation accounts are not eligible for API access. A live, funded Tradovate brokerage account is required." |
All three quotes come from Tradovate's API Access article (last updated by Tradovate on September 16, 2026). Tradovate can change these terms at any time, so treat that article as the authority if it ever disagrees with this page.
A live account funded with $1,000
The first gate is money in a real brokerage account. Tradovate's help center sets it at a minimum balance of $1,000. Tradovate's API documentation words it slightly differently: "You need a LIVE account with more than $1000 in equity." A Tradovate staff post on the company's community forum from 2021 says the same thing ("hold greater than $1000"). Since the two phrasings differ, plan to hold a little more than $1,000 rather than exactly that amount.
Until you meet this, Tradovate won't sell you the add-on. In its own words: "If you do not yet have a live, funded Tradovate account, the Subscribe button will be greyed out."
Tradovate's article doesn't say what happens if your balance falls under $1,000 after you subscribe. If you plan to withdraw, ask Tradovate support first.
The API Access add-on
The second gate is a paid subscription. In Tradovate's Web Trader, open Application Settings, choose the API Access tab, and click Subscribe. Tradovate's help center lists the add-on at $25 a month, payable from your account balance or by credit card.
Two details are worth knowing before you pay:
- It covers orders, not market data. Tradovate states the add-on "does not provide access to real-time market data." Order placement and account information are included. Streaming market data through the API needs a separate CME license. Autoview uses the API for orders, and when your alert carries the price it doesn't call Tradovate's market-data feed at all, so you can skip that license. The CME license guide explains how.
- The key is shown once. After you subscribe, you generate the key on the same tab, sign Tradovate's agreement, and pick its permissions. Tradovate displays the key one time only, so store the CID and Secret somewhere safe.
A personal brokerage account, not a prop account
The third gate is about whose account it is. Tradovate's help center is direct: "Prop firm and evaluation accounts are not eligible for API access." The key has to come from your own live, funded Tradovate brokerage account.
Traders on Tradovate's community forum have run into this for years. One 2024 thread opens with "we know that the Prop Accounts do not allow direct API access," and another asks whether a personal key can reach Apex accounts, with replies from other users only.
If your futures trading happens on a prop firm or evaluation account, Tradovate's API is not the route to automate it. The question to ask is your firm's: which platforms it provisions, and whether its rules permit automated order entry at all.
Why a Sim-only login can't get a key
A Tradovate Sim (demo) account trades practice money, and there is no funded live account behind it. That's exactly what the first gate checks, so a Sim-only login can't subscribe to API Access, and without the add-on there is no key.
This is the part that surprises people, because Sim itself looks free. It is free on Autoview's side: Tradovate Simulation is a $0 connection on Autoview's pricing page. The key behind it still has to come from Tradovate. Once a qualifying live account holds the add-on, the CID and Secret it generates work for Simulation as well as live, and you choose which one to trade when you connect the key. The Tradovate Sim guide covers that setup.
The same requirements apply to every bridge
Autoview connects to Tradovate with four things: your Tradovate username and password, plus the CID and Secret from the key described above. Nothing on Autoview's side creates a key or changes who qualifies for one. Those are Tradovate's rules, and they apply the same way to any tool that trades your account through your own API key.
If a tool tells you it skips these requirements, ask which route it uses to reach your account, then check that route against Tradovate's terms and, on a prop account, your firm's rules.
What to do until you can meet them
You don't need a Tradovate key to learn how webhook trading works. The path from alert to command to order to log is the same on every venue Autoview connects to. Only the symbols and a few venue-specific parameters change.
- Practice free on a sandbox that needs no funded account. OANDA Practice, Capital.com Demo, and crypto testnets such as Bybit Testnet and Binance Testnet all give you demo funds. Autoview charges nothing for practice connections. None of them trade CME futures, but your webhook and your log behave the same way.
- Dry-run any command. Add
d=1and Autoview logs exactly what it would have done without sending an order. The testing guide shows how to read the result. - Know which practice accounts are gated too. TradeStation's simulator also requires a funded brokerage account first, per TradeStation's own site. The TradeStation Simulator guide has the details.
When you're ready for Tradovate, the order is: fund a live account above $1,000, subscribe to API Access, generate the key, then connect it. The Connect Tradovate guide walks through the key and your first test order, and the Tradovate command reference covers every order type once you're connected.
